Hancock completes double as Quaife produces fine recovery drive

Sam Hancock completed a perfect weekend for Jota Sport by following up the team’s maiden Porsche Carrera Cup GB victory in race 1 of the weekend at Thruxton, with a second win in race 2. Meanwhile Phil Quaife produced a superb recovery drive through the field to finish fifth having been tapped into spin early in the race.

Starting third on the grid, Hancock dived up the inside of Tim Harvey off the line to run second and then defended fiercely from the Red Line Racing driver in the opening stages. A moment of contact at the chicane actually turned the race in Hancock’s favour as Harvey broke his radiator and retired and, on the following lap, race leader Michael Caine almost lost control on water which had leaked from Harvey’s car and bounced the kerbs, losing his front splitter.

Hancock was quickly onto the race leader, and passed him with a brave move on lap 11 to take a lead which he never looked like losing in the remaining 10 laps.

Quaife meanwhile got boxed in at the start and went from fifth to eighth after Charles Bateman, Duncan Tappy and Nigel Rice muscled past. A move round the outside of Rice on lap 3 seemed to have regained the Kent driver seventh, but Rice tapped Phil into a spin which dropped him to tenth.

He immediately picked off Matt Blyth for ninth and was up to eighth as Rice retired with damage from the collision. Tony Gilham was dispatched for seventh and then the retirements of Harvey and Tappy saw him back in the top five and pushing hard with a handful of laps remaining. A fantastic charge in the closing stages allowed him to close up to Caine, but the championship leader just held on despite Quaife’s best efforts to wrestle fourth place from his grasp.

Heading into the next round at Croft on 1st June Hancock lies fourth and Quaife fifth in the driver’s championship, both having closed the gap to the drivers ahead.
