Having waited all season for his first, Jota Sport’s Phil Quaife secured his maiden pole positions in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone today in a closely fought qualifying session.
The 22 year-old had emerged as one of the favorites for pole after impressive displays in Friday’s free practice sessions saw him post the second quickest time of the day behind championship leader Michael Caine.
He would go one better on Saturday though, recording a best time of 57.078secs which would be enough to pip guest driver and British F3 regular Nick Tandy by less than four hundredths of a second.
A similarly quick 57.172 on his following tour would also prove too hot for his rivals, this time securing a second pole by less than a tenth from championship leader Michael Cane.
Team mate Sam Hancock will line up fifth for both races on Sunday, winding up only three tenths off of Phil's pace after recording a best lap of 57.350. The times suggest just how closely matched those at the top of the championship are and both men will be hoping to convert their strong qualifying pace into victory tomorrow.
Quaife said: "It’s been a long time coming but we’ve done it. I’ve got to say a big, big thanks to the engineers and all the guys at Jota. They deserve it as much as I do. We’ll be looking to get a good clean start tomorrow and hopefully keep everyone behind me."
Hancock said: "Obviously from the team’s point of view I’m thrilled for Phil. The most exciting thing is that’s four pole positions in a row for us now which is great. I’m obviously disappointed though to have come off the back of a great weekend at Knockhill and to only qualify fifth here. But tomorrow’s a whole new day. Anything could happen."
